The Expos Background Info
The Expos blazed their own trail through reggae & music since 2003, avoiding obvious influences and leaning towards more personal reflections on the genre. Heavy bass & drums are offset by tasteful vocal duets. On stage, however, The Expos are a completely different entity, turning the volume up, and crossing the borders between reggae & psychadelia & some third sound that doesn’t really have a name yet. They have brought their live show to audiences across Canada & The United States & will continue to do so until death do them part. (via The Expos Facebook Page) From Newmarket, Ontario, Canada, The Expos (originally debuting as The Donuts) have been putting their own unique twist on Ska and Regga since 2003. The band has released two albums, Old Friends (2005 and 2007) and Blackwater (2009). The Expos are currently working on a new album, Other Canadas which should be released in the near future.
MarsBands Review
The Expos have a wonderful sound about them. Although Ska is sort of an offshoot of Reggae to begin with, The Expos tend to incorporate it into their music more than your typical Ska band would. Also prominent in the band’s music is the element of Psychedelia. Many other Ska bands tend to take a more Rock approach to their music. The Expos are different. While at times their music could be considered Rock, there is too much Reggae and the music is slowed down too much to be classified as Rock.
The vocals are amazingly fitting for the music. Extremely laid back, yet highly intelligent. The guitars have your typical Ska sound, which I am a huge fan of. The Expos tend to have more of the Jamaican drums in their music, which enhances the Reggae.
Below is a small sample of some of their songs as well as some videos from YouTube. Check them out and enjoy!
